Meridian received
funding from
The Rockefeller Foundation to assist in the
conceptualization and development of an
initiative expected to encourage new tripartite agreements
between pharmaceutical companies, host-country governments and
the international donor community to help expand
private sector contraceptive marketing in developing
countries.
On behalf of The Rockefeller Foundation,
Meridian began by hosting a Strategic Planning Meeting in
Washington, DC in 1997, attended by representatives of USAID, IPPF and UNFPA. Building on the expertise and
experience of Meridian principals in USAID social marketing
programs worldwide, Meridian presented key issues for
negotiation with the pharmaceutical companies participating in
this initiative (Wyeth, Schering, Organon, Pharmacia &
Upjohn). The social marketing issues that Meridian analyzed
included eliminating barriers to access through increased
distribution, reducing price barriers and eliminating
psychological barriers to contraceptive use through behavior
change communications campaigns and marketing activities
designed to educate consumers.
The Concept
Foundation
Meridian received funding from
The Concept
Foundation to assess the current status of the market for
Emergency Contraception in Pakistan. The general market
assessment included the documentation of registration
requirements, status of ECP registration, related marketing
activities to date and the relevant opinions of the private,
NGO and government sectors. This work is part of Meridian's
ongoing activities in support of expanding access to and
understanding of emergency contraception.
