Meridian
recognizes that health, education, and nutrition are interrelated and
that improving the health status for men, women and children
must involve a well-integrated cross sector approach. For
example, deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals (
vitamin A, iron, folic acid or iodine) can cause serious
health problems such as birth defects, maternal death, and
impaired physical and mental growth.
One
way to address nutritional deficiencies is to promote
micronutrient products, for when a basic commodity (such as
flour or salt ) is enriched with micronutrients, and care is
taken to properly price and promote it, there are many
positive nutritional results.
Working
with food manufacturers, food distributors, food trade
associations, Ministries of Health and the donor community,
Meridian has helped develop projects that increase access to
and demand for fortified food products.
Meridian has also developed educational communication
campaigns designed to increase knowledge and awareness of
the benefits of micro-nutrients and fortified foods.
Meridian has helped design promotional campaigns to support
the marketing of fortified food products in the private
sector through a totally integrated approach that includes
the use of consumer advertising, public relations, trade
relations and grass root activities for the community. |
